India's highest-selling compact sedan for much of the 2010s–2020s, and Maruti's booted counterpart to the Swift. Four generations in India: the first two were sold as Swift Dzire (a stretched, then shortened, Swift); from May 2017 the Swift prefix was dropped. Sub-4-metre from the second generation to sit in the small-car tax class. Built in India; successor in spirit to the Esteem. India launch: 26 March 2008.

Watch-outs
Owner-reported or cited issues for this generation, not official recalls.
MediumZ12E feels dull vs old four-cylinderDrivetrain / Review consensus
Z12E is 8 hp down on the outgoing Dualjet, strained at the top, 0–100 kph AMT 15.21 s. A 5,000 km long-term report found city drivability lethargic versus the Swift on the same engine; the tester had to slip the clutch on a steep ramp. Tuned for economy over response. Not a defect/recall.
Despite being 5 mm taller than the Swift, rear headroom is tight for taller passengers because the sunroof mechanism (absent on Swift) eats roof space.
Idle start/stop cuts the engine too early in crawling traffic. Testers switch it off at the start of a drive. Applies across current Marutis, not Dzire-specific.

Used-buying guide
MediumAMT early clutch wear / jerksMechanical / Occasional
Check that the 5-speed AMT gets off the line without jerks and shifts smoothly. AMTs are susceptible to early clutch wear — inspect before buying a used auto.
On Z+ cars, confirm the 7-inch SmartPlay unit works smoothly; some owners had issues. A 2017 long-term test called Suzuki’s SmartPlay clunky, buggy and prone to crashing, with laggy Android Auto on that car.
Used-buying guide
LowSteering does not self-centreMechanical / Characteristic (long-termer)
In a 2017 long-term test, the electric steering often failed to recentre after a turn, adding a constant correction the tester found frustrating. Typical of several contemporary Marutis, not a recall.
